Two idiots abroad!

Note to self: when deciding on a day trip to another place to specifically visit a museum....CHECK the opening times!!!!

So it was another very wet day in San Sebastiàn and we knew that it would be a good opportunity to go to the nearby city of Bilbao. We hopped a bus which took over an hour and we were happy to arrive.

We worked out the tram system very quickly, as there was only one line :) Then it was off to the Guggenheim Museum! We were in awe of the architectural design. It is said that often people don't go in and merely go there to appreciate the building itself.

It looked a little dead around the area, but we figured that the crappy weather was keeping people away. WRONG! Approaching the main entrance, the plaque spelt out our destiny.....Closed on Mondays!

So annoying and the worst thing was that we had been reading about the Guggenheim in our Europe book as well as our Lonely Planet iBook. We basically read the information about the kinds of exhibits but didn't read on about prices and other useful info. Dumb!!! As we said...two idiots abroad!

We moved to plan B and went to the tourist information centre. Can you believe it???? Closed Mondays! Both the one near the Guggenheim and the one located in Old Town were closed.

We had a daily tram ticket, so after gathering our thoughts at a nearby coffee shop, we made the most of our day and made our way to Old Town. This was when we found out that the second tourist info centre was also closed. Oh well, we have learnt from this!

Rather than wasting the day, we decided to go bar hopping instead, sort of! We found two cool little bars and very cheap drinks. The ordering of drinks in Spanish has improved!

Tan: when all else fails, just use Italian! It seems to work....well it's better than English. Then after the Italian order in French then finally go onto English as a final resort! Always seem apologetic and all will be cool!

We decided to find a place for lunch and ended up doing one of those meals of the day, which is three courses and a beer or wine for only €11. Winner!! We were disappointed that we went all the way to drink in some bars and go out for lunch, but in the end we had a good time and a laugh at our idiotic ways, albeit €50 lighter from transportation costs alone!

Back to San Sebastiàn we went and the rain was even worse than earlier in the day. So a bit cold and wet we headed back to our pension to rest and watch a couple of eps of Criminal Minds whist getting warm and dry!

Finally at 10pm we headed out to dinner for just something light and ended up sharing an awesome warm prawn salad and a plate of grilled fish and seafood. We met a couple of Aussies from Lyndhurst and Langwarren and had a bit of a chat about our travel experiences. Dare we say it? It's a small world!
