Venimus, vidimus, vicimus

Today we decided to make a trip to the Appian Way (via Appia Antica). This is one of the oldest roads in the world and dates back to the 4th century and is also the road where Spartacus' men were crucified.

Hopping on a metro train and getting out at a station relatively close, we made our way in the direction of this old road. Armed with our cached map of the area, we wandered through a massive reserve to get to our destination. After walking along many dirt tracks for about an hour or so, we eventually found the road we were in search of.

It was an exhaustingly hot trip through the reserve and such a relief when we eventually found the Appian Way. After a brief stop for some photos, we had to make our way to the city centre along the road itself.

The Appian Way is closed to vehicles on Sundays, but today wasn't Sunday. It was full of traffic and was a harrowing experience walking along the walls of the private residences that occupy the sides of this road. Walking with the traffic approaching us was the better option - at least we could see when we were going to die, rather than being taken by surprise!

It may have taken three hours in the hot sun, but we finally got a chance to sit down and relax for lunch near Palazzo Venezia. We had our meals, followed by a cheeky gelato before heading to the meeting point for the segway tour.

The guide spent about 30 minutes training our group on the use of the segways before we could venture out on the busy Roman streets. Normally training is quite boring, but we had a blast learning how to master these beasts.

Zipping through the streets of Rome, we learnt about the history behind all the famous landmarks, which added to our prior knowledge. It was fortunate for us that we got to see some landmarks that we had missed due to time constraints. We both really enjoyed riding the segways and when the adventure ended, we were both wanting more!

Rich: I might have to invest in one of these machines when I get home. During our ride, Tan almost ran into a truck when the whole group had to suddenly stop. She gave out a 'mi scusi' and a smile and all was cool with the truck driver. Thanks to my brothers and sister for this wonderful birthday present it was friggen AWESOME!!!

Sadly walking away from our segways, we went in search for a place to eat. Marg and Dan, you'll be happy to know that we found Mario's in Italy. Tucked in a small street behind the Roman Forum, we had a delicious meal and then it was back to our B&B to pack for our trip to Verona the next day.
