Wünderbar München!

Starting the morning with a fabulous (yet a little weird) breakfast at the hotel was a great start to the day. We headed out around 11am to explore the main Old Town area, which is where many of the historical monuments are located. This was a very busy pedestrian area with some decent shopping. It was surprising to see the large amount of shops selling traditional German clothing and even more interesting to see how many local people adorned themselves in these outfits simply for the sake of it!

We slowly meandered along, taking in the fantastic weather (23 degrees). It was a much better walking temperature, compared with other days where we've had around 40 degrees. As it was Saturday today, there were so many hens and bucks parties on the go. They all seemed to have their own themes going on. The Supermen team were a real crowd pleaser. Again it is ok to drink in the street, so some groups carried crates for their empties and one group even had their own trolley. Please forgive the blurry photo!

After taking a while to soak in the magnificent Marienplatz (main town square), it seemed like a plan to head towards the Hofbraühaüs. On route, we stumbled across a packed market area with lots of stalls and people drinking on the street. There was also a band, a couple of horse-drawn beer carriages and loads of people in their traditional dress. It seemed like a festival, but was probably just a usual Saturday! Wow those one litre steins are an impressive looking beer. We decided to stick with the original, Hoffbrauhaus blend, which was nice and a good decision.

It was about lunch time so we had some traditional German food - one plate was pork sausages and sauerkraut, whilst the other was roast pork with a massive gelatinous potato-like dumpling. Our meals were pretty good. Some older German ladies taught us the methods of flattening out the dumpling and covering it in gravy! We must have looked like noobs (meaning people new to something in gamer language)!

Another couple ended up sitting with us on our table (quite a normal thing to do). We straight away started chatting with them and soon found out that Matteo and Gianna lived in Maui and were on a wicked world trip, even more impressive than ours. Awesome! Matteo is Italian, so we instantly had a connection trying out our limited vocab and hand gestures. So funny. Gianna is from Panama, but has lived in the US basically her whole life. They were so friendly and we really had a lot of good laughs and a great time with these guys.

Later we all headed back to the main square to see the 5pm
Glockenspiel show, which was probably a bit overrated. Hey at least we saw it in action! After the clock did its thing, we forged a plan to meet back at the square for cocktails, dinner and possibly a lounge bar later on.

Back at the room, a nanna nap was required...the beer had worked its magic by that stage. We both felt better after freshening up for dinner and walking back to the square. The hens and bucks parties seemed to be endless and they didn't all seem to be German groups, as we saw some Roman soldiers and the Supermen were English.

Once meeting up with Gianna and Matteo is was straight to a coffee shop for an espresso and water to reenergise ourselves. We all seemed to be feeling about the same, so our 'pre' pre-dinner drinks were appreciated.

Our next stop was looking for somewhere to have an aperitivo. We found an extremely busy indoor mall area, which appeared to house lots of shops, a big bar area upstairs (that had a private function), but also a bar perfect for our aperitivi. Perfecto! So many people were drinking Spritz Aperol. Three Spritz Aperols and a sparkling wine and we were all set. Great drinks with great company!

Next stop it was a very late dinner at a nearby restaurant. It was close to 11pm and we actually struggled to find somewhere still serving dinner. Today ended up being a real Italian theme - a new Italian friend, espresso drinking, Spritz Aperol and then a nice Italian dinner. Buonissimo!

Unfortunately, when we went hunting for a nice bar to continue on, everywhere looked closed! We were so surprised, given the amount of people around during the day. We figured that it wasn't the area where the locals went out, or it seemed to be a day time party place. Either way, we decided to call it a night and swapped details. We are really looking forward to catching up with these guys again in Melbourne in October.

Yet again another fantastic day - lots of fun! Something to ponder: are you classified as a two drink screamer when you struggle after two steins? Hahahaha!
