Go berserk with the Berserkers!

Tan: This morning after departing Edinburgh, we headed onto another Heritage Pass location at Hadrian's Wall called Corbridge Roman Town. Everything here is soooooo old (not in a bad way). This town was just a piece of the wall, which was around 74 mile across the neck of England. Construction started in the middle of the first century and is almost 10 times as old as Australia.

After we'd taken in the general serenity of this great wall town, we moved on southbound towards our destination in York, stopping at a town called Darlington for lunch. Richard had to be careful there, as he actually manages the town's soccer team (in a computer game of course) and he didn't want to be mobbed! Whilst we were enjoying our pub lunch (who would've guessed), we were also making sure that none of Richard's players were out on the drink! These soccer players are a little like our AFL boys .....enough said!

We arrived in this amazing Viking town of York around 3pm and headed straight into town. Much of the accommodation is outside of the city walls, as the township is highly dense and parking is a nightmare. We hopped on a bus and headed in!

Just walking the streets was amazing! I led the way with my Europe book and and took the gang around a location tour of the city. OMG York Minster is enormous, apparently the largest gothic church in Northern Europe and was built in the 1200s.

The city centre is in most parts still surrounded by fortress walls, built in the first century by the Romans. World domination certainly took a lot of work. It was pretty cool walking on the walls, as it gave a great view of the city, with the minister always dominating in the background.

Although York has endured a range of ruling powers over time, it is most famous for being the hub of Viking rule between 866 and 1066. Our visit to the Jorvik Viking centre was quite good too, although one of the dummies freaked me out (a bit like Chuckie)! It reminded me of the little freaks from It's a Small World at Disneyland!

Late in the day before dinner, we had a couple of drinks in York's oldest pub and then moved onto another pub up the road for dinner. My prawn and chorizo salad was divine! We saw at least 4 hen's night pub crawls taking place and thankfully the group of 30 were knocked back just as we were heading in for our dinner! The funniest lot was the group dressed as convicts! If coming to this town boys, beware....the women definitely move in packs! A great day and night out and about exploring the city of York.

Rich: Leaving Edinburgh, we made our way south towards a town called Corbridge. Along the way we stopped at the Scottish and English border for a few photographs.

Arriving at Corbridge, we got to experience and learn some more about ancient history. This time it was at the ruins of a once Roman garrison town where off duty soldiers could visit and spend their time. This place was ancient, originally built in the 1st century.

Anyway, after spending about an hour in the cold we made our way to Darlington for some food and then our final destination of the day, York.

Arriving at the pub we were staying at, we unloaded the car and then hopped on a bus into the walled town. We had a chance to visit the Jorvik Viking centre where we got to see a recreation of York's viking history before we set out to walk around the walls of the town.

Working up a thirst, we found ourselves at Ye Olde Starre Inne, York's oldest pub. After a couple of rounds of drinks and finding out they weren't serving food, we wandered over to another nearby pub for dinner.

Along the way we were entertained by the locals as we saw a few groups of hen's parties looking to find some establishments where alcohol was being served. The largest, a group of 30+.
